When Seconds Matter: Improving Response Time in Person Overboard Situations

The deck is wet. The vessel is moving. Operations are underway.

A crew member loses footing during hauling operations and disappears over the side.

At first, there’s confusion.

Someone shouts. Another crew member points toward the water. The vessel continues moving forward as the person drifts further away in rough conditions.

Immediate recovery isn’t always possible and in those first moments, every second matters.

The ocean gives very little time for hesitation.

During active commercial operations, a Person Overboard (POB) incident can escalate in seconds — especially in rough weather, cold water, low visibility, or high-traffic work environments. One missed visual, one delayed response, or one lost location can quickly turn a recovery effort into a critical emergency.

For crews operating offshore, alongside infrastructure, or in transit, response time is everything.
